From the initial idea, through crowdfunding to design and production and finally launching, it certainly was quite a trip with plenty of ups and downs. So it was fantastic to mark the occasion with a special thank you event. It was an emotional evening for me, and I’m really happy so many people joined me to celebrate our journey. The launch was more of a celebration party and a chance for me to personally say thank you to everyone that helped along the way.

Growing up as a young girl my mum often used to say “tidy up your room”. And this became more common as I became a teenager! Another thing she said that really stuck with me was ”Your room is a reflection of your state of mind”. This is something I found to be very true when I started working with people as a professional organiser.

Having seen again and again the transformative effect that changing their space had on their state of mind and their lives, I really wanted to find a way to make this experience available to more people. That’s where the idea for the Home Declutter Kit sprung from.

Overcoming obstacles

As I developed the kit I was mindful of the common and recurring obstacles that people face when dealing with a cluttered home. People very often talk about things such as feeling overwhelmed, not knowing where to start and having a sense of shame or embarrassment.

Another common obstacle is that our ‘inner child’ doesn’t want to engage. There is a conflict between the part of us that doesn’t care (the inner child or inner rebellious teenager) and the part that craves order and beauty. The beautiful design and images in the kit are to both engage the inner child and inspire the part that wants order and beauty.

Wanting to give up when things get tough is another obstacle people often face, and I know that feeling having faced it many times during the development of the kit. Thomas Edison famously said creating something new is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration. To that I’d like to add “ and 150% determination!”

Whatever project you are taking on, decluttering a cupboard, a room, a whole house, starting a business or launching a product; my advice is to define a clear vision and goals, have a clear process so that you know how you’ll get there, and then roll up your sleeves, get going and don’t give up, whatever obstacles come up. And most of all, COMPLETE the process. Cross the finish line and celebrate your achievement. That’s what I did and it feels great!
