Set up the cards and the space

Clear a working area

A big area of floor is good, so push back furniture to give yourself plenty of room. If you have a bad back, you can work on a table top. Set up containers so that you can reach them and attach your cards. You might have to walk to them, depending on how much stuff you have and how big the items are, but ideally stay seated during the weeding process.

Here is an example of a set up for a paperwork declutter.

How to lay out your cards

  • Start by choosing the cards you need, remembering to read the notes and helpful tips on the back of each one.
  • At this stage, I recommend you don’t pick too many cards from the blue Optional extras set. Try to stick to the essentials. It can get way too complicated if you have too many cards at the start of the process.
  • Pin up your Goals and Prompt cards somewhere prominent.
  • Next, set out your cards in a circle or semi-circle in front of you on a table, the floor or in the garden (as below). Attach the cards to some large containers or raise them off the floor so they don’t get buried, by sticking or pegging them to furniture or the walls.
  • Put the Bin it, Recycle it and Donate it cards nearest the door, as those piles will be going straight out in step three.
