The biggest obstacle to change isn’t your clutter. It’s resistance.

Have you noticed how the moment you decide to declutter, something inside you whispers, “Not today”? That’s resistance – the inner force that works to keep you in the familiar. It pretends to keep you safe, but really it keeps you stuck.

Sometimes resistance is obvious – the heavy weight that leaves you paralysed. Other times it’s far more subtle. You suddenly find “more important” tasks to do. You make excuses: “I can’t do this because of that.” You put things off until tomorrow, next week, someday.

It’s as if two voices live inside you. One is resistance – fearful, doubtful, resistant to change. The other is your life force – the part of you that wants to grow, that longs for clarity, freedom and a home that truly supports you. Which voice you choose to listen to will shape your future.

Clutter itself is the evidence of resistance. Every “I’ll deal with it later,” every avoided decision, every pile left for another day – over the years, these small moments of resistance have accumulated into the clutter that surrounds you now. It’s not just stuff; it’s a record of stuckness.

And often, clutter is also tangled up with the stories resistance has woven: “I might need this someday,” “It was a gift, I can’t let it go,” “I’d be wasteful if I threw it out.” To truly move forward, you may need to gently unpick those stories. Letting them go creates the mental space for a new, more empowered, future-facing story of your life.

But tackling the psychological side alone isn’t enough. Lasting change comes when you combine inner shifts with outer action. That means practical, focused steps: setting aside dedicated time, tackling big areas in one go, joining a structured programme, or working with someone who can guide and support you. Different approaches work for different people – the key is finding the one that helps you move forward and sustain momentum.

Steady and consistent effort is a great way to maintain order once it’s established, but as a method for clearing a backlog of clutter it rarely works. In the middle of busy, distracted lives, those small efforts too often fade away. Real change comes from carving out blocks of focused time, where you commit fully and push through resistance. That’s when the breakthrough happens – clutter lifts, energy shifts, and you finally feel the freedom of space opening up around you.

Those are my thoughts on resistance – the silent driver of clutter and stuckness. How do you experience it in your own life?

The good news is you don’t have to face it on your own. This is the heart of my work, and I’d love to help you move through resistance and create the home – and the life – you truly deserve. Whether that’s by joining Simply Declutter, stepping into The Clutter Shift, or working with me one-to-one, I’m here to support you in finding the clarity and freedom you’ve been longing for.

  1. I have read and understood.

I do have moments of clarity when I think I could, should and would get rid.

My biggst area of resistance is finding derserving, good, appreciative “homes” for my new with tags clothes (Dress Agency aspirations over twenty years ago), arts and crafts (therapeutic workshops) not to mention all the “bottom drawer” stuff for my “forever” home.
