overview of the six steps

Step one: Set a clear intention

Before you start, sit down and get focused. Then write down your goals and intentions. These can be simple – just focus on how you’d like your home to look, how it will feel and what you’ll be able to do once it’s finished that you can’t do right now.

Step two: Set up the cards and start weeding

This is like the trunk of the tree – the main bulk of the work.

Take a pile and set it down in front of you. Then start allocating each of the items to one of the cards you have laid out. Remember this stage is just about weeding. Trust your first instinct or gut feeling when deciding, working swiftly and piling things next to each card.

Step three: Clear the decks

The aim of this mid-way tidy up is to create some space. In this step you deal with the piles of things you’re not keeping.

Step four: Box and label the other piles

After your clear up you should be left with four piles:

  • Keep it • Action it    •  Don’t know  • Memories

Leave aside the Keep it pile, we’ll get to that in steps five and six, first let’s deal with the others

Step five: Sort things into categories

Okay, time to deal with your Keep it pile. Some people enjoy this part of the process so much they try to do it too soon! It’s all about grouping things

Step six: Create beauty and harmony

Now it’s time to find homes for all the categorised items from your Keep it pile. Really enjoy this part! You may feel tired, but now is when you can really put the love back into your home. It’s an opportunity to see your home through fresh eyes, view it with pride and treat

it with respect

Step seven: Maintain order and build habits
