Worried about landfill when decluttering?

worried about landfill when decluttering

It is wonderful – and vitally important – to be concerned about the environment. The choices we make about what to keep, what to let go of, and how to dispose of things really do matter. That’s why this blog shares some advice on making your decluttering project as environmentally friendly as possible.

Could being worried about landfill when decluttering be avoidance?

That said, it’s also worth considering whether this question sometimes acts as avoidance or resistance. Decluttering can be emotionally tough, and it’s easy to reach for reasons to postpone making decisions.

Ask yourself honestly: how many of the things you’ve held onto in the past because “they will be useful someday” have ever actually been used? In many homes I visit, the answer is very few. Instead, those objects gather dust in cupboards, lofts, and garages, quietly taking up space and energy.

Facing the reality of landfill

If you declutter diligently and are still left with items that can’t be recycled, upcycled, or donated, the sad fact is they will eventually end up in landfill. It’s not a question of if, but when. By holding onto them indefinitely, you’re essentially storing them temporarily in your home – and perhaps leaving them for someone else to deal with in the future. And that person may not be as conscientious as you are.

What you can do instead

The key is to take every reasonable effort to dispose of your things responsibly. Pass on what can be reused. Recycle where facilities exist. Get creative with upcycling if you have the energy and interest. And then, for what’s left, accept with compassion that you did your best when buying things in the past – but you have different values now.

I wrote another blog on this subject you might find helpful if you find you are so worried about landfill when decluttering that you get stuck.

Rather than holding on to what no longer serves you out of misplaced guilt or shame, let the completion of your decluttering project mark a new beginning. Use it as an opportunity to change your consumption habits, buy with more awareness, and choose quality over quantity. You might even want to go further and offset your carbon footprint with a service like Ecologi: https://ecologi.com/

Your home and the planet

Decluttering is not only about letting go of physical items – it’s about reshaping your relationship with possessions, consumption, and the environment. When you shift this perspective, it becomes easier to release things without guilt and focus on the choices you make from this point forward.

Remember, your home is your personal environment. Just as with the wider environment of our planet, treat it with love and care. When you nurture it, it will nurture you in turn.
